Should You Moisturize Before Microdermabrasion?

Should You Moisturize Before Microdermabrasion?

Anyone who’s ever had microdermabrasion treatment done on their face knows that it is no easy feat. Not only is it expensive, but it also takes patience and a clear schedule. You should prepare before your treatment begins to ensure you get the full benefits of the skin procedure.

One crucial aspect of this preparation process is moisturizing the skin hours before your appointment. We’ll explain why this step leads to better results—and help you decide whether or not to moisturize before microdermabrasion.

When you’re trying to decide whether or not to moisturize before microdermabrasion, it can be good to know what kind of skin type you have and how it will react afterward. Knowing this can help you make an informed decision on whether or not you should moisturize before microdermabrasion treatment.

Understanding Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a refreshing and effective way to rejuvenate your skin. It works by gently polishing away the outermost layer of dead skin cells and lifeless skin, revealing newer, healthier skin below.

This gentle exfoliation process unclogs pores and stimulates collagen growth using a diamond tip microdermabrasion wand.

Treatments can improve acne, age spots, fine lines, discoloration, blemishes, and other common skin concerns while also improving absorption of your skincare products. All of these factors contribute to healthier skin, meaning you're that much closer to achieving your best skin ever.

Pre-Microdermabrasion Instructions

The first step before you undergo microdermabrasion is to make an appointment with a professional provider. This will allow you to ask questions, learn about what to expect during the procedure, and determine whether your skin is suitable for this treatment.

Using the Internet to search for information on microdermabrasion is fine, but it's crucial not to make any big decisions without consulting a professional. Even if you have no immediate plans to undergo this procedure, it's always good to be prepared, in case it becomes necessary.

Before undergoing microdermabrasion treatment your skin must be in good condition. If you have been suffering from acne, sensitive skin, or other skin conditions, treatments should be completed before your microdermabrasion session. It's also a good idea to check for any warts or moles that may need removal. If so, treat accordingly before your appointment with your provider.

Do not use a washcloth, loofah sponge, or any other exfoliating tool on your face for 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. This means you must not scrub, rub, or otherwise physically stimulate your skin in any way. This is because your skin needs to be very still to get the most from Microdermabrasion.

Exfoliation is a No

Exfoliating before the procedure will make it impossible for us to get an accurate reading of your skin's condition and compromise our ability to make any necessary adjustments during the procedure.

Avoid excessive drinking or smoking before and after the procedure as these activities can dehydrate the skin and prevent optimum penetration of treatment chemicals into the skin, which will lead to ineffective treatment or adverse side effects such as redness, itching, swelling, etc.

Use a light moisturizer that can be washed off easily with soap and water. Moisturizing before microdermabrasion helps hydrate the skin and keep it supple so that it can repair the damage caused by everyday stress and makeup buildup. Using a good moisturizer may even help improve the results of your treatment!

Post-Microdermabrasion Instructions

After treatment, avoid moisturizing for about half an hour after the procedure, to allow maximum penetration of the chemicals into your skin.

Microdermabrasion may also leave you more susceptible to sunburn, and sun damage, so always use sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater whenever you are outdoors or even on a cloudy day. Remember that even on cloudy days UV rays can cause sunburn.

Avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours after treatment as this can cause adverse reactions such as redness, peeling of the skin, sunburns, and make-up can cause stinging and discomfort on the treated area.

Do not rub the face. Rubbing will irritate and increase the likelihood of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Begin using a gentle, oil-free gentle cleanser at least two times a day. This is the most important thing you can do to promote healing and prevent infection and inflammation.

A warm water compress may be used to help reduce the redness and increase blood flow in your face, which will, in turn, help your skin moisturize and return to its normal coloration as quickly as possible.

When to Consider Microdermabrasion?

There are a lot of different methods of exfoliating the skin. Most are quite harsh and send your skin into post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that requires months to return to baseline.

Microdermabrasion is different because it's a milder and more controllable form of exfoliation that works with your body's natural healing processes to gently remove the top layer of dead skin cells and reveal newer, brighter cells.

When done correctly, microdermabrasion will leave you with healthier and younger-looking skin in as little as three treatments.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion treatments can help you achieve a brighter, more radiant complexion and a smoother, healthier-looking skin texture. Perfect for treating sun damage, acne scars, or fine lines, it exfoliates the top layer of your skin gently and strategically to reveal a younger-looking complexion.

Microdermabrasion treatments are ideal for dry, sensitive, or reactive skin types. This skin resurfacing procedure is non-invasive and performed in dermatologist offices.

How Often Can I Have Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a safe and effective way to exfoliate your skin. This mild treatment can be performed up to every eight weeks, depending on your tolerance level.

Many people start with weekly treatments for three sessions, then change to monthly maintenance because it makes the results more effective and less stressful on the body.

Microdermabrasion treatments will continue to deliver results for you month after month, as long as you continue to allow time between treatments. We recommend staying as consistent with your treatments as possible and wearing sunscreen every day between microdermabrasion or chemical peel appointments.
